Subject:Vintage Ink Drawing on Rice Paper - Value and Identification
Posted By: Michelle Mon, Jun 11, 2012 IP: 72.49.187.53

I purchased this from an estate sale and much to my dismay, I have been unable to find out anything about it, or it's maker marks. If anyone has information, it would be truly appreciated. Thanks so much!

The artist is Hokusai and it is from his series 36 Views of Mt Fuji - #30 Shichiri beach in Sagami Province. The original Japanese woodblock series was published circa 1830. This series is probably the most popular ever printed and has been copied literally 1000s of times. The likelihood of having a valuable original are small. Your pictures are too small for me to evaluate it.

See link below for Wikipedia article on the series.

Cheers,
Stan

Judging purely from the enlarged signature in your second picture, my assessment is that your print is a later reproduction as expected. At auction on artelino.com, such a print sold for $60 on 7/31/2005. Since yours is framed, it might bring around $100 at auction.

Cheers,
Stan

I should mention that my assessment of value depends on your print being a woodblock print (as opposed to a modern reproduction method).

I have a later reproduction (woodblock print) of #3 "Rainstorm Beneath the Summit" - affectionately known as "Red Fuji".

Cheers,
Stan
