Subject:Bronze Foo Dog Edo Period Chinese Script...
Posted By: Juan Tue, Jun 12, 2012 IP: 87.216.168.82

Hi!
My father bought this bronze piece around 1970 in Boston. Aparently is a Foo Dog of chinese style, but it has some scripts on the base, I would love to have any help about the origin of the piece and what is written on it.
Someone told my father that one of the symbols on the base was the one of Edo Period in Chinese, Not sure if that is correct.
I would apreciate any help.
Thank you.

Kyoto not Edo (ToKyo).

The mark continues: CHO or naka (long) KOKU or tani (valley) SEN or kawa (river) EKI or yasu (easiness) CHI or shi (knowledge) ZO (made)

This is Japanese rather than Chinese and others will read the Japanese pronounciation better than me, but here's a first cut: Kyoto, Nakatani X X X zo, or Made by Nakatani (first name) of Kyoto.

I think this is Japanese as the two characters, top right, says Kyoto, can't help with the others,

Thank you very much for your help. Really apreciate it!
I found a bit of info about the artist. It seems that there was an exhibition in Kyoto National Museum in Feb Apr 2008 showing works by this artist and family members, who fall on the group from Edo to Taisho period

This is just for anyone that likes to know more about pieces ;)

you sure found that pretty easily from the limited information we gave you. are there links to the objects in the kyoto exhibition? I don't see any on the museum webpage.
