Subject:Unknown Chinese Dynasty Mark
Posted By: Jenny Sun, Jun 17, 2012 IP: 108.87.136.115

I bought a pair of vases from a new vendor at a flea market. The older guy said he bought this pair of vases in China in the 1960's and it cost him nearly $100 to have them sent back to the USA. He said they were purchased as antiques at the time, but I know how that goes many times. The handles are stylized as bats. I've included a link to my photobucket account, the first 4 picture are the vase in question. The decoration doesn't look like the typical Chinese stuff I see in flea markets. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jenny

Hi Jenny,

The mark reads "Da Ming Jiajing nian zhi" but when bought the vases in the 1960's they were probably new at that time.

Regards,

Arjan

Jenny this is a fantasy piece; it's decoration imitative of Japanese pieces, its form very heavily potted but not resembling anything I can think of, and the base with a Ming Jiajing reign mark. I'd think it's pretty recently made.

Thanks Guys!!! I'm glad I didn't make the $50 investment in buying these two vases.
