Dear all, we have found this old statue in our attic and hoping someone can help us to find out exactly what this statue is, because it looks really old and cool, but what is it we have no idea. Hope to hear from someone! Thank you in advance!!!

Hi Lama,
Your statue is Japanese and represents Juichimen Senju Kanon or the eleven headed Avalokitesvara, the Goddess of Mercy. This deity is very popular in Japan and there is a fabulous temple in Kyoto the Sanju Sangendo which contains 1001 life size or larger carved and gilt wood statues of this Goddess. The original temple hall was founded in 1164AD, burnt down in 1249 and rebuilt. This was completed in 1266
