Subject:Japanese Bronze Elephant
Posted By: Jill Fri, Jul 20, 2012 IP: 108.231.72.137

I got this in a storage unit. Was wondering if it has value or if is a fake. One tusk is broken and tail is broken too. It has a Japanese marking on belly.

Japanese bronze elephants made in big numbers during most of 20th century and maybe today, many with tusks appearing to be made of ivory (but some could be plastic or composite material). Not 'fake' of anything ancient.

Good luck,
Cal

The seal reads, with the maker's name written in hiragana, 'Seiya saku' (made by Seiya).

Genryusai Seiya was a Meiji period Japanese workshop specialized in high quality exotic bronze models of animals, human figures and vases, made for the export market, late 19th century but, to my knowledge, other maker's marks were used. Your model could be a later 20th century copy with a fake mark, but this is just my own supposition. Maybe, others could recognize this 'Seiya' mark.
