An expert from the University of Wisconsin examined this painting some years ago and told me it was a 17th century painting. But when I sent pictures to the auction houses, no one would tell me anything or take it on consignment. My father bought it in Hong Kong in the 1950s. Can anyone offer information about this very large, very beautiful painting?

it is possible that it's as early as 17th century, but I'm not convinced of that on the basis of these two photos, which aren't clear enough to make out much concrete. more likely it's 100 or more years more recent than that. the figures, the building detail and pine seem well done, the clouds etc rather less so. is there any seal (check the bottom corners) or ink inscription on the painting that you can photograph? the major auction houses at present are not particularly interested in this type of work, which would be considered today more decorative than collectible, though a place like Skinner would probably be happy to have it. it's likely the product of a professional workshop, perhaps selling to the wealthy merchant class of the time, or perhaps to the family of an urban civil servant. better photos would help, but it will be hard to pin down a date, location, or artist if there are no more clues.
