Subject:Help needed to identify an Asian charger
Posted By: David Wilburn Tue, Jul 31, 2012 IP: 90.198.254.144

Hi everyone

I recently bought the charger pictured below. I know very little of Asian art, and it is unmarked, so I don't know what to make of it. To my eyes it looks 1800s. It appears to be ironstone, and it is very nicely enammeled. It is about 15 inches across.

I have put further higher res pictures at the link below:

Any help or advice would be very gratefully appreciated :)

David

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi David,

Yes I have thoughts, but would expect a (blind) mark on it. Does it have a single spurmark on the back?. I think it is Japanese, probaly from the yamatoku kiln. Hard to date but I guess made somewhere in the 20th. century. (As far as I know this kiln still excists).

Regards,

Arjan

Hi Aryan

Thank you very much for your response!

Do you mean a mark like the one in the picture below?

As for age the wear pattern and pitting to the base suggested to me that it was a bit earlier than you suggested, it could be 20th century though I'm sure.

Regards

David

Hi David,

It looks a bit like it but this (black) spot looks more like a firing flaw to me. If a single spur was used I would expect it to be in the middle.

Regards,

Arjan
