Subject:correct identification to end debates (PLEASE)
Posted By: Reagan Tue, Sep 04, 2012 IP: 98.124.101.199

I have inherited a large amount of Japanese (?) items and don't have a clue what half of them are! This has been on my table and everyone that comes into my house has a different suggestions as to what it might be!

I believe it's made out of jade. The openeing doesn't go all the way through. It's only about 9cm/3.5in long and not even an inch at the widest point. I can get exact measurements/more pictures...whatever is needed.

Thanks for any help~

not Japanese but Chinese, carved in the form of an archaic bronze vessel called a "gu" (kind of a beaker), but yours is longer and thinner than the bronze forms (and otherwise smaller). I'm sure some of the jade/hardstone lovers here will arrive shortly with a plausible guess as to the type of stone and approximate date of manufacture.

THANK YOU rat and ernest! I truely appreciate yall's (you guys) help (:
Unfortunately I live in SC...wish I was close to BC because I could really use some help w/all this stuff-don't know chinese from japanese-definately in the dark.
I have another piece that looks similar to the one I pictured earlier...could they be a set? The "new" one is much larger. It's not with me right now but I'd guess the mouth is about 4x2 inches. I tried to photoshop the pic to bring up the engravings-wasn't too successful w/ the pic I had. I'll try and take some better pics the glare tends to make it difficult sometimes.

Neat to look at all the treasures other people have! Thanks again-sorry I'm a little long winded!

yes, same type ("gu" and "ku" are alternate English transliterations of the same Chinese character), not a set though.

This is a Chinese Ku Vase, and yes, it looks like white (off-white) Nephrite (Jade) to me. With very sharp pictures from all sides one can tell how old it is. It could be from the Qing dynasty, or from the last Century. If you live in the Vancouver BC area, I would be able to look at it.

the picture with 08 - 29 201.. there is a black spot in the middle. To the left and right of the spot is a white line. Can you scratch that off?

The black spot is unfortunately a small hole. The white lines on either side can be scratched off. All of this has been boxed up and stored in a barn for 3/4 years.
What would the Gu vase be used for? The round one is so small! Could you tell what the symbols said?
Thanks again for all the helpfulness! Surely appreciated!

I received better pictures, which show sloppy "engraving" Most likely this carving was made in this Century. I still think that it is white Nephrite.

Another proof that it was recently made!

What are the white lines-I don't know anything about Jade!

Do they have any monetary value since they are new?

I really appreciate the help! Thanks.
(I'm posting a link to photobucket with pics of all the other stuff I don't know anything about. I would appreciate your input! I don't want to keep a box of junk around)
THANKS AGAIN GUYS

I don't see any link.
What you scratched off was wax.
Pieces like that are great to study Jade. Most real Jade carving have some value..depending to whom you sell it.
