Subject:Chinese Birds on Canvas - Red Seal Marks Identification?
Posted By: Alison Fisher Thu, Sep 13, 2012 IP: 94.192.59.101

Hello all
I picked up a lovely piece of Chinese art at auction recently and wonder if anyone can offer any advice on it's age and what the red seal marks / stamps mean?
The picture appears to be painted on canvas and is of 2 small birds. There are 4 red seal marks stamped on the picture - can anyone translate?
Any help would be very much appreciated in helping me identify my lovely picture
(see more photos in next message below)
Thank you
Alison

this is a reproduction of a painting in China that was first published in the mid 1950s in a book called "Sung-jen hua-tse". The original dates from the Song dynasty, (960-1279), perhaps from the southern Song dynasty that started in 1127. the painter is not known, the seals are collectors' seals. the two in the lower right belong to a famous Ming collector named Xiang Yuanbian. not sure of the other one pictured offhand.

Thank you so much. Very interesting. So as a reproduction would you say this is quite modern?
Regards, Alison
