Subject:Pith Paper Paintings
Posted By: Steve Thu, Sep 13, 2012 IP: 68.111.178.221

Hi - I recently found a silk covered binder with 10 painted plates inside. I see no indication of a signature or symbol anywhere inside or outside of the book. Most of the images are in very good shape, but at least a couple of them have small tears or damage on the edges or corners. All of the images and painting are remarkably brilliant and deep colored. These do not appear to be recent, but I am no expert on these.

I am interested in getting these appraised, and then maybe selling them.

If you view your series of pictures starting on the right, you will see the story of the tea industry: preparing the field for planting; planting, growing, picking, drying the leaves in a dry wok, and sorting, packing and finally drinking.

Very nice.

Greetings, and thank you for the reply. That certainly makes more sense now. I saw one other example detailing the opium trade. Someone else on Craigslist also mentioned these were exported to US and Europe over 100 yrs ago. Is there any guess you can make on how old they are? Should I just assume late 19th century?
