Subject:Set of 6 Chinese fan paintings - Help with ID
Posted By: Tim Mon, Sep 24, 2012 IP: 76.108.41.153

I acquired this set of fan paintings from a famous designer in South Florida who died. During her life she was an avid collector of Asian art.

Among several paintings and porcelains, I bought this set of fan paintings.

I do not read Chinese, but they look to be of very good quality.

I would like to post photos of all the paintings, but since there is limited photo space (3 photos), I will post a photo of the group, and 1 photo of my favorite fan painting with a close up of the writing.

I would appreciate any help that can be offered as to the identity of the artist of each painting.

Thank you.

on the basis of what I can see of the photos posted I would agree with you that you have a nice group of Chinese paintings in literati style, probably all 19th-mid 20th century, some possibly earlier, but won't be able to tell without shots of the individual items.

Surname of the rock painter is Dai, will have to come back later to look up the full name.

Bottom two photos are of a fan painting purportedly by Yun Shouping, an early Qing painter sometimes linked with Wang Hui (one of the four Wangs who constitute Qing orthodox landscape style). I'd be very surprised if this is a genuine work by Yun though, there's little variety in ink tone and the brushwork is too crude and simple for an artist of Yun's caliber.

The picture in the top two photos is supposed to be another Dai Xi, lower quality than your other Dai Xi. interesting to compare and contrast...

I should have just taken a good look at the seal earlier: the painter is Dai Xi (1801-1860), a fairly prominent late Qing court painter under the Daoguang emperor. I am not familiar enough with his painting and writing style to say this is his hand, and there are many copies of his work in the market at this point, but the painting quality looks pretty decent to me. But don't take this as an authentication until someone trustworthy has done more research.

Thank you for your help. I was able to match the seal with examples of Dai Xi paintings that have sold through auction, but since the subject matter of the rock is quite unique, it is difficult to compare it to the more typical landscapes done by Dai Xi.

Please let me know if you are able to identify any of the other artists.

My sincere thanks for your help.

Careful, seals are readily forged as well. You have one more "Dai Xi" and one "Yun Shouping"; I'll have to look up the other two when I have a minute.

PS: don't leave them out on the floor; keep them from bright light.
