Subject:A chinese bowl with a dilemma
Posted By: Ken Tue, Nov 20, 2012 IP: 171.25.193.235

Had this object lying around for years, the other day got into a conversation with a friend who runs an art gallery dealing with totally different objects, but who, nevertheless, is convinced to be an expert in.. well.. everything art related.

Anyway he thinks it's from the late 1800s... I beg to differ, but I need some proof to corroborate my thesis

My grandpa got it in the late 30s from a dutch friend who spent the turn of the century in Asia.

This is late Qing dynasty, Guangxu period crackle glaze with a warrior decoration. Whether it falls into the late 1800s is difficult to tell, but it looks older than many of this type, that are sold nowadays.
There is the possibility that some colors were over-painted at a later date. If you look at the decoration you will see the crackles through the original colors, only the white and yellow colors show non-transparent, thick enamel.

Ouch.. so he could be right.. yet again!

the funny thing is that he offered me 500 bucks for it, not that I want to part from it..

thanks for your kind help, I've just attached a picture of the inside to help you have a better look at the cracks.

Hi all,

I think this piece is OK, colors are not overpainted. I also would date it to the late 1800's. In Holland they call this Nanking ware. 500 dollar seems a very good price to me.

Regards,

Arjan
