Subject:mid 20th contemporary?
Posted By: steve Mon, Dec 10, 2012 IP: 64.80.116.194 Hope someone can tell me something of these as I have no information. Signature marks are similar on both, but have slight differences. Maybe notes a studio? They are originals on either linen or silk. Thanks! |

Posted By: rat Tue, Dec 11, 2012 the first signature seems like it's Korean. I can't make out the second from your photos, but yes, relatively recent. Not Chinese, possibly Japanese, perhaps Korean. |

Posted By: steve Wed, Dec 12, 2012 Yes, by the looks of the framing, and how old the crepe tape on the back is, I would guess 40's or 50's. Wondering if there is a database to compare the signature to? These are kind of sealed up around the back with a thin wood backer. I dont know if I should open one up, if there would be anything on the inside... |

Posted By: rat Thu, Dec 13, 2012 there are no databases except for the most famous artists, and those tend to be made by interested scholars/collectors/dealers and aren't publicly available. if these are Japanese woodblock prints of some sort, there might be value in removing them from the frame, which may be concealing margins with some publication information on them, but if they are paintings rather than prints, there are not likely to be any secrets hiding behind the frame |
