Subject:Japanese bowl, is it unusual?
Posted By: Bruce Thu, Mar 07, 2013 IP: 98.175.252.114

Hi,
This bowl is roughly 8" diameter and 1.5" tall. the gold lines around the dragon figure in center tend to 'pop out' when viewed under different angles and the eliptical 'holes' around edging are translucent. i've never seen this type of thing before and don't think its real old but would like to know more about it... can anybody help with more info?

thx

Hi Bruce,

Not Japanese but Chinese.
Certainly not unusual because they still make such ware today and it is sold in warehouses for a few euros.
The pattern is mostly called the rice grain pattern and and they started to make it in the second half of the 19th. century as a kind of revival of the older (late Ming) Linglung pieces.
Because they made/make it for such a long time it is a bit hard to date. Yours is probably transferprinted and not older than the second quarter of the 20th, century. The mark reads "Wanyu".

Regards,

Arjan
