Subject:Help identifying Japanese seascape painted on silk
Posted By: Eric B. Sat, Apr 20, 2013 IP: 74.215.89.33

I understand that this may be a longshot, but I was wondering if anyone can help me find information on the painting posted below. I found it at a local thrift store in Cincinnati, and fell in love with it, and would love to know more. I took Korean in college, but I don't have any exposure to Japanese, and don't know how to translate the signature in the bottom corner. However, I'm fairly certain that it's japanese.

It appears to be painted on silk. It's either very recently done, or very well-preserved. It's in a custom frame from a shop in Cincinnati, so it may be an artist local to that area. Most importantly, it's a gorgeous, serene seascape. I can't stop examining it, and can't wait to hang it!

Any insight would be appreciated!

Hi Eric
I am not so sure photos refers to a japanese painting because even though the 1st word is unkown for me the 2nd word is definetly the chinese word 光 (pinyin: Guāng) and it means light.
Strictly by the painting in my opinion the painting style seem more chinese than japanese or Korean.
Cheers

not so sure about that, to me it seems Japanese. the artist's name may be 春光, possibly "Shunko". the Japanese (and Koreans in the past) use Chinese characters but assign them their own pronunciation, one that is either based on the Chinese pronunciation or one that comes directly from the Japanese language. "Shunko" would be the Japanese version of the Chinese pronuncation of the two characters.
