Subject: identify cup and saucer - strange mark
Posted By: Thanos Tue, Apr 30, 2013 IP: 62.1.60.100

Dear all,

this has belonged to my family for at least 5 decades. I have been unable to find any information online regarding the achor mark "WINCO or WINGO - BEST KAOLIN". I presume the style is Japanese. Any more information would be great to have!
Thank you in advance.

Hi Thanos,
I think you are right. This cup is japanese, and I would guess from the 1930s or even a bit later. It was made for export. I have no information about the maker, WINGO, but maybe someone else can help you with this
Regards, Mat

Dear Mat,

thank you very much for the information. I guess I will have to keep searching for the maker.

Please do share any other information about the type or technique. I find interesting how some of the paint, the swirling filling of the garments, is in relief.

All best wishes,

Thanos

This type of decoration with raised enamels is called "moriage" and was popular on japanese export wares from the late 19th century up to mid 20th century. It is often seen on crackeled earthenware, but your cup & saucer should be porcelain. A search in this forum, in the gotheborg.com glossary or google for the term will provide you with additional information.
Cheers, Mat
