Subject:Antique Jade: Please help identify period
Posted By: Ali Shah Tue, Jun 04, 2013 IP: 182.189.4.12

Dear all,
please help me identify this piece of jade (image included): an exquisite Rhyton (approximately 4 inches tall). This piece came into my collection from a diseased family member. unfortunately one of the legs of the Rhyton is broken (this is the way it came into my collection. And there's some chipping of Jade at one place on the rim of the Rhyton.)
I am a novice Jade collector and therefore will appreciate as much information about this piece as I can get from fellow collectors/dealers/experts. Bundle of thanks in advance.

The proportions are way off and overall design look really crude. Severely lacking in woah factor to the trained eye. Likely a badly done modern reproduction made of low grade material. Sharper pictures may help but nothing to be excited about unfortunately.

Sorry to say that this item is made from Serpentine. The color and the broken leg indicate that.

Thank you Earnest...this was the first time I heard of Serpentine, and it prompted me to google in order to glean more information on this stone.
One thing I found interesting though was that notwithstanding its worth -as a stone- being lesser than that of Jade, some of Serpentine antique pieces nonetheless were as valuable as that of Jade's. This is true exclusively and I am not implying that my particular piece falls in that classification :).
Once again thanks for sharing your opinion and information.
