Would some kind person help with a translation on this vase please.

This Japanese vase, in its form, floral motif and palette, looks quite a bit like others I've seen that were made during the waning days of the Kinkozan Studio in Kyoto, which was active in the late 19th and early 20th century. However, I think the red writing on this one may serve as the title of the painted scene, as opposed to being an artist or studio mark. Cursive characters and Japanese transcriptions aren't my strong suit, but these may be "煥之中色", which if correct would mean something on the order of "Colors amidst Brilliance".

As usual, I welcome anyone who would care to drop by and clean up after me.

I agree with your first character Huan - 煥

I suggest the second could be Wen - 文

The third is very confusing but could be Zuo - 坐

Of course, the last is Se - 色

Make any sense to you?

Mike, appreciate your input. "Wen" has got to be the right character, though I'm having trouble fathoming how "zuo" might fit. Maybe it'll come to me in a dream, soon as the independence celebration ends here and those fireworks (and corks) stop popping long enough to sleep.
