Subject:Please identify gray glaze pitcher with impressed seal
Posted By: Jeanne Tue, Jul 23, 2013 IP: 75.84.55.131

Hi experts. Here is an estate sale find. This pitcher is covered in crazing, inside and out. The bottom has an impressed seal. There is a small chip on the spout. Can someone please help me identify the artist and it's possible age?

Thank you in advance.
Jeanne

I am no expert, but the seal reads 犬山 (dog mountain) which in Japanese is read Inuyama or Inoyama and is used as both a place name and as a surname. Inuyama ware is the name usually applied to ceramics made near Inuyama castle.
A google search for "Inuyama ware" or ceramics should show some images of similar ware.
The piece looks modern (after 1940s) but that is just a casual opinion.
Cheers
O
