Posted By: LS Smith Fri, Aug 02, 2013 IP: 46.64.5.115

The readers of this Forum may wish to learn about the life of James Lord Bowes, the author of Keramic Art of Japan, and other volumes on ceramics, from the new biography shown below.
This is the only authorised biography of this important 19th century collector and student of Japanese Art. Available from the link below.

Thank you for posting this! I'm interested in learning where portions of his collection went after he passed in 1899. I think I know where one is...
Ref. Plate XXV, Keramic Art of Japan, Audsley & Bowes, 1881.

Enjoy!

Apologies, I have been away for a few days and did not catch up on emails or posts here. Also apologies for failing to successfully include the link I intended in my last post, it is actually as follows:

I think perhaps you have quoted the wrong plate in Keramic Arts here, it is actually XXXVIII where, in my opinion, the artist did not do such a good job of depicting the vase you show here - though Bowes must have been satisfied enough with it to include in the final publication. PM sent.

Thanks partly to this forum a few more pieces of the 'lost' Bowes collection have surfaced, such as the Taizan vase above. The latest object to surface is the biggest object that was once displayed in Bowes' private museum; this Norimono. We now know that it was bought at the Bowes sale in 1901 by Mr Phillip Whyman, a Manchester city Councillor, who then donated it to Manchester Art Gallery - where it is currently included in their 'Eastern Exchanges' exhibition until the end of May 2015.
19th century, unsigned, reputedly the property of Tokugawa Yoshinobu, 15th and last Shogun. Acquired by James Lord Bowes in 1868.
