Subject:Vase Identification
Posted By: Adam Derbyshire Thu, Aug 15, 2013 IP: 86.112.3.254

Hi,
I recently purchased a 2nd hand vase as a gift for my mum.
She was wondering if anybody could tell her anything about it's origins or age?
I have attached a picture of the vase and of the marking on the bottom.
Any help is much appreciated.

Many Thanks
Adam

The decoration appears from its style and enamel tones to make this vase a mid-20th century or somewhat later Chinese product, its figural motif possibly inspired by "Dream of the Red Chamber" or another classical literary work.

The character written in black on the base (瑞) is pronounced "Rui" in Mandarin and means "Felicitous Omen". It also is the abbreviation for "Switzerland" (瑞士 - Ruishi) in Chinese.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Adam

The way this piece looks (especially the strange appearance of the signature on the base) reminds me of some much earlier thread here. The vase may be a set decoration from a classic era Hollywood movie, and not Chinese at all.

I am not sure how this affects value at all - try searching for that old thread.
