Subject:Chinese Jade Carving of Birds
Posted By: Larry D. Wed, Aug 21, 2013 IP: 71.12.185.38

Hi~! I'm looking for help dating this piece of intricately carved jade in the form of 2 birds on stylized bonsai trees. The piece measures exactly 5 inches tall and about 2.5 inches wide at the base. There are very fine details including tiny tongues inside the birds beaks. There is also a sticker on the base with some writing that may help with identification. ANY assistance is GREATLY appreciated~!

On second look, the translucency is bothering me a little. Could be serpentine? If it is serpentine, the value could drop drastically as compared to a fairly common Chinese nephrite.

The body proportions and carvings (low to average standard) in the second image all point towards late 20th century or even last 10 years.

Material wise could be Chinese nephrite but cannot tell with much confidence from the photos. Sometimes such material appear grey-green or celadon on the computer when it is fairly white in reality.

The sticker was probably left there as a form of identification by a shop or auction house. Quite meaningless to be frank as anyone can stick it on and scribble some stuff on it. Anyway, the bottom half of the sticker says 5 "xin" or 5 new in English.

This is a quite modern Bowenite carving.

Serpentine carving, modern.

Chinese character on label means "NEW".

To clarify: Bowenite is the hardest known Serpentine.
