Would appreciate any help in translating
what I think is Mandarin into English ?

Box is more likely Japanese, late 19th or early 20th century.

I believe the diamond mark is for Nagoya,Japanese as said on previous post.

The kanji in the cartouche at right in the photo is on its side, 90-degrees left of reading position. flipped correctly, the first three stacks look to be as follows:

日本 - Japan
東京 - Tokyo
川林 - Kawabayashi (surname)
??? - Uncertain

The large character within the square at left also appears to be flipped but will require a bit more staring down to figure out.
