Subject:Jade necklace

Estate sale item from Oklahoma oil farm in the country. Family of estate said $1.00 and it would look good with my construction boots, then laughed. Local Rock Shop gemstone tester says jadeite; all jadeite including little translucent whitish beads. Told no artificial dyes and all real jadeite. What you say?

It is very difficult to decide what they were made of from your pictures. They look more like quartz to me than jadeite but they can be made of jadeite, only a specific gravity test can tell for sure. (It is hard to do an accurate S.G. test on tiny beads like these though). Since quartz has almost the same MOH hardness of jadeite (both about 7), therefore a scratch test will not tell you anything. A gemstone tester is actually quite worthless in confirming jadeite. You did not do too bad though if you only paid $1 for it, whether it was made of jadeite or quartz. If they are indeed jadeite, but in such light translucent color, your necklace will be worth a few dollars but nothing to get too excited because most people especially would probably not wear such a necklace.

Thanks for the quick reply; so true jade is impossible to analyze with photos. First three photos are taken under a high watt table lamp to show translucent quality and veins. Not seen with the naked eye. These next photos are actual colors in room. The color is not that terrible.

Well, it's not a painted Turkish white onyx.
