Subject:Question about an old japanese porcelain vase with inscriptions
Posted By: Luciano Wed, Nov 27, 2013 IP: 10.18.117.152

Hi there,
I hope someone can help me to know something more about an old japanese (or I think so) porcelain vase with inscriptions: above all, I would like to know the meaning of those words.
Thanks a lot for your kind assistance and best regards,
Luciano

Hi Luciano,

It's a bit hastily written so I need confirmation by others but I think it reads: "Dai Nippon Hichozan Shinpo zo". Dating: Meiji period.

Regards,

Arjan

Hi Luciano and Arjan,

The mark is a bit rushed but still consistent with signatures of Hichozan Shinpo illustrated in the book of marks by James Lord Bowes, who called the wares bearing them "modern" when he wrote the book in 1882. The Hichozan studio seems to be associated mostly with polychrome export porcelains, often decorated for the Fukagawa companies. However, I did find one pair of 48-inch floor vases by this studio in my internet search.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I will read about Hichozan studio to know something more about this factory.
Thanks again and best regards,
Luciano

Hi all,

To complete: "Dai Nippon" means; great Japan and "zo" (or tsukuru) means; made. As mentioned by Bill H. Hichozan ware is best known for their polychrome export porcelains as you can see on the first picture. The two others pictures shows a more classic Imari style which is a bit harder to find. You also will find connectections with "Hirado".

Regards,

Arjan
