Subject:Hiroshige Print - 100 Views of Edo #56
Posted By: David Silver Fri, Dec 13, 2013 IP: 74.71.23.17

I am trying to help a friend determine the value of this print which she believes is original. I know the pic is not very clear, but I was wondering whether anyone could make any comment based on what they see here. I will post some better pics of the details when I can. Thanks very much!

If the pic isn't very clear, then it isn't very useful.

I'll comment without seeing the picture. The iconic prints of the 100 Famous Views of Edo series (for example, 107, 112, 89, this includes #56, Irises at Horikiri) will have a gallery price in the low five figures (maybe half that at auction) - IF they are in PRISTINE condition. If they have been framed and displayed and are faded, or toned, or damaged in any way, this price rapidly drops.

See the link below for a $13,000 example. By the way, you can get information like this using Google.

The two questions are then, originality and condition - neither of which can be determined from a poor picture.

Regards,
Stan

Thanks for your response. To follow up. I got an answer from japanesprintappraisal.com, to the effect that the print is an original, first edition, with some serious color fading (the violet) and slight trimming. They said it might fetch $1200 to $4000, depending on precise condition, in a Specialist Auction in Japan, and there is one coming up in mid-January. Any familiarity with these folks?

I also plan to speak with the specialist at the Ronin Gallery.

Again, any advice appreciated, I'm completely new to this.
