Subject:identify mark on 4" Satsuma egg
Posted By: David Fri, Feb 21, 2014 IP: 99.236.194.58

Hello All! Can anyone identify the mark on this 4" Satsuma egg; I have attached a color and b&w pic of the mark (it is a difficult mark to read, even on my end!). Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

This isn't a character but a scroll motif commonly called an "arabesque" and frequently encountered in Chinese and Japanese ceramic patterns. Here's an enlargement of a section of diaper on a late 19th century Guangxu-period vase.

Best regards,

Bill H.

PS, your "Satsuma" egg looks like one of the Chinese fakes that sometimes have labels of "Royal Satsuma".

I also believe this is Chinese 'Satsuma", many pieces were produced and exported from China in late 20th century. Different marks are found, some are hidden under a label.
Tricky, as at first glance the decorations look like Japanese moriage (enamel dots). But it is too gaudy and poorly decorated overall with no age indicators to be real Japanese vintage.
