Subject:Help Identifying this Vase

Can someone help me identify the mark on the bottom of this vase and give me any other information they might have. I was curious why both handles have little holes in them.

This is an average quality Japanese export Kyoto-style stoneware vase of the late Meiji-Taisho era (circa 1900-1926). The characters form a factory quality control marking, reading down as "Right (side), 29", possibly related to height or another dimension and indicating the vase was part of a pair or set originally.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thanks Bill, it sounds like alot of these were made. This one has tiny holes through the handles, I'm not sure why, and a chip on the base. Do the holes and chip make this worthless. My wife likes it so I guess it doesn't really matter. Thanks!

Hard to say from the pix what might account for the holes in the handles. Might just be from burst bubbles in the glaze. Size matters when calculating value, and you don't mention the height of this vase. However, this pattern and palette was fairly common among Japanese exports of the period, so I'd expect a single vase in perfect conditon would be worth only about $150-$200 at retail in the 12-14 inch size.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I can tell you it is a Japanese made for export pottery vase. Dating early 20th, about 1910-20. The style of decoration with heavy enamel application is called moriage.
I do not know the maker's mark, but many producers where involved in this type of business at that time.

Hi all,

This is not a makers mark but just markings to fit a pair together. It reads "right" and (I think) "29". Commenly done on Satsuma-like ware from Kyoto. This also means that your vase is/was part of a set.

Regards,

Arjan
