Subject:Help With IDing A Seal On Dehua Porcelain Blanc De Chine Statue
Posted By: Kardinal Tue, Apr 01, 2014 IP: 68.10.98.83

Hi,
Any chance someone can ID the seal of the artist?
Or at least narrow down the time frame the piece was made?
Thanks

I believe the seal script mark on your Guanyin image reads down and across from the top left in Mandarin as "Dehua, Fujian" (Standard characters: 德化福建), the place where the piece was made. It appears to have been slip-cast, a technique Chinese potters began using around the end of the Qing Dynasty. If I'm right about the character reading order, it suggests the image was made no earlier than about the mid-20th century.

Best regards,

Bill H.

福建德化

Not an artist's name. A geographic location - FuJian DeHua.

It would appear to have been slip moulded, thus fairly recent in manufacture.

Thanks for your reply. What kind of technique they used for the older pieces and how to tell slip cast from it?
