Subject:is this a Ming dynasty tea bowl?
Posted By: David Sun, Apr 20, 2014 IP: 99.236.194.58

Hello All! Can anyone tell me if this is a Ming dynasty bowl? It measures: 5" in dia. There is a partially obscured potter's mark on the bottom covered by an import wax seal! Any assistance with this query would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

NOTE: As we are allowed only 3 pics on the forum at a time, additional pics of this bowl can be uploaded!

Hi David,

No, it can't be from the Ming period. The seal on the bottom is a jianding wich is a export approval mark. This means that it can't be older than Jiaqing period. The last years they made the rules even tougher, As far as I know; nothing antiques (Qing and earlier) is allowed to export.

Regards,

Arjan

No. Jian Ding is a certified export approval seal and has nothing to do with Jiaqing.

Under Chinese cultural preservation laws, it is unlawful to export ANY Chinese antiques, relics, art, artifacts, etc made prior to 1911. The only "antiques" that can be legally exported are post 1911 made.

The Jian Ding on your piece means it was inspected in China and approved for export, meaning the item was made post 1911, the end of Qing dynasty era, the beginning of PRC.
