Subject:Question re Celadon Vase Strange Mark

Hi. Just wondering if anyone recognizes this mark on this celadon crackle vase. Thanks in advance for any help!

The seal-script character on your vase or pot would read "Guan" (官 - an officer or official) in Mandarin. It was used as a marking on some Chinese ceramics during the Tang-to-Song periods, of which eras this piece appears to me not to be.

Best regards,

Thanks for the reply. Would you have any idea how old the piece is by looking at the photos? Also, was there a period, other than the Tang or Song, when it was common to add this mark to pottery? It is hand thrown and seems to be fairly well executed. I was told it might be a brush jar and not a vase, though it looks to be rather large for that. vvThanks again.

I found an auction result for a crackle-glazed vase with the same mark and holes on the bottom. It's a large vase and indicated to be modern, a judgment I can't see reason to doubt. The piece sold for $60, which seems to me to indicate the bidders took the auctioneer at his word.

Best regards,

Bill H.
