Subject:Question re long watercolor handscroll
Posted By: Tom Mon, Jul 07, 2014 IP: 199.59.106.195 I know this is a copy of a famous work and was just curious if these are still being made or if someone could tell me something about this particular scroll. I could not get the whole picture in the frames so I have uploaded a couple selections. It is about 17 feet long and watercolor and ink. Thanks! |

Subject:Question re long watercolor handscroll
Posted By: rat Mon, Jul 07, 2014 Yes, this is a very popular painting in China, and reproductions (some of quite poor quality) are fairly common. You can find a number of the low quality ones on ebay for next to nothing. It is more difficult to find high quality reproductions; one place to check if you happen to visit China are the bookshops in the departure terminals of major airports. This one is not a very close copy, in particular it has a lot of color added and some detail and most of the wash lost, but the original is about 10 inches tall with incredible detail so that's not entirely surprising. The frontispiece on yours is different from the original also. You can find a good quality zoom-able digital photograph of the original scroll here: http://scrolls.uchicago.edu/scroll/spring-festival-along-river |

Subject:Re: Question re long watercolor handscroll
Posted By: Bill H Tue, Jul 08, 2014 I believe another copy of this famed Song Dynasty hand scroll may have been the subject of a query here in the forum in recent years. In any event, anytime there is a famous Chinese painting, every following generation of Chinese artists seems to spawn those who are irresistibly drawn to pay tribute to it with copies for appreciative audiences everywhere. I've included the URL below to the Wikipedia.org page concerning the original. |
