Subject:Japanese or Chinese Usual Mark?
Posted By: Tom Tue, Jul 08, 2014 IP: 88.111.34.0

Hi having some difficulty dating this lovely little ginger jar it is 4.25"in hight I think it's Chinese because of the enameled design but the base mark looks Japanese? Note the base mark is hand painted and it also has a very small hand painted red mark just around the neck rim. Just visable in the photos. Any help with age/dating, makers mark and origine would be most welcome.

Kind Regards
Tom

Hi Tom,

It is Japanese and the mark is one of "Yamatoku". A factory started in the early Meiji period and that still excistst. Known for their transfer printed ware in the early 20th. century. I guess your's is more from the late 20th. century.

Regards,

Arjan
