Subject:Chinese calligraphy - 1 of 3 paintings
Posted By: Tim Sun, Jul 20, 2014 IP: 172.56.29.250

This is a set of 3 calligraphy paintings. Measure 38.5" tall x 17" wide, so fairly large. All by the same artist, seals are the same on each of the 3 paintings.

I will post other 2 paintings in additional posts.

Gallery that framed the paintings date stamped the back, March 4 1992 (Maimi).

I am curious to know what the panels say, if they belong as a set or are just 3 different pieces by the same artist, name of the artist, year of creation.

Calligraphy is such a mystery to me....How can you tell GOOD from BAD/Decorative?

Thank you.

Super or Bill H will probably be able to offer you more on the text, but these are three separate pieces by the same calligrapher, someone surnamed Hu, whose given name he signs with too much cursive in it for me to make out. The seal gives a different first name, again with Hu as the surname. Sorry to be leaving you hanging with all the missing first names! The inscription in the first post includes 1992 as the date it was written and states that it is text from the first section of the 三国志, a history of the western Jin period following the Han dynasty. The item in your second post seems to be a meditation on Su Dongpo's (aka Su Shi) Ode to the Red Cliff, two well known poems, but not the text of either poem itself. During the Western Jin there was a battle at the site where Su wrote his poems. (http://www.npm.gov.tw/exh98/redcliff/page_en_03.html) Your artist may be drawing a connection between your first two works. The third one is a text about two Tang era figures, Hanshan and Shide (its text is transcribed at this webpage immediately following the heading labeled "1": http://baike.baidu.com/view/1184539.htm)
