Subject:Gold Vasudeva I Kushan stater - real or fake?
Posted By: Ayla Yulong Tue, Aug 12, 2014 IP: 110.148.129.217

Dear Asianart members,

Many years ago I purchased a golden Kushan stater online from a large numismatic auction house in Belgium. They listed it as being a Vasudeva II coin but I've done my research, looked at many many pictures of Kushan coins from all kings and have come to the conclusion it is an early Vasudeva I coin. If it's authentic that is. I started doubting its authenticity after realizing their Vasudeva I/II mistake. It also looks almost too perfect.

I hope I can get an expert opinion here :)

I tried to picture the coin as best as possible. Hope it is good enough.

Many thanks in advance,
Ayla Yulong

Can you post a picture of the rim? It looks ok but one has to handle it to be sure.

I'll try but my iPhone isn't cooperating at the moment.

However, the rim is not much spectacular... it is just smooth. The coin rim is uneven in thickness, varying between 1 and 1.5 mm. I figure the smooth rim could indicate ancient coin shaving?
