Subject:Ming Chenghua plate?
Posted By: Frans Sun, Aug 24, 2014 IP: 62.204.94.217

Hi!

I have a plate here and I think it is Ming from the Chenghua period. Can someone help me determine how old it is and if it is worth anything? It is damaged, broken into three pieces and glued together again by a hobbyist.

Hi Frans,

It's marked indeed as Chenghua but it isn't from Ming but from Qing dynasty and more specific from the Kangxi period. Unfortunately it has to much damages to have some "real value"

Regards,

Arjan

How would you know it's dated qing kangxi since the marking say otherwise. Is the plate newer and are the markings replicated? I gave it a better look and the markings definitely say Ming Chenghua.

Such a shame that it isn't worth anything. Still looks nice on my wall though.

During the Kangxi period, the Jingdezhen kilns experienced problems as they tried to mold lighter porcelain. The glaze at the edge of the rim tended to thin out too much when firing, producing frits and skips, which revealed areas of naked biscuit. Your first photo shows apparent examles of this production problem at about seven o'clock on the edge of the rim. Here are images of another Kangxi plate with Chenghua mark that suffered from the same issue. It is molded similarly to yours to the extent that it has a foliated rim too.

Best regards,

Bill H.
