Subject:Help identify silk painting
Posted By: RSHtt Sun, Oct 05, 2014 IP: 67.250.40.138

I found this painting, or wood block print (I'm not really sure) at an estate sale for $30. No one there knew anything about it. It has a very nice custom frame which drew me to it. It's approximately 19 cm x 14 cm and on silk with a silver silk boarder. I've been doing some research and it looks Chinese to me, just by the character of the brush strokes and the fact it's on silk. I thought the letters were Japanese at first, I translated them to say "pine tree moon" I think. But Japanese and Chinese characters are the same for these words. I've had no luck with the printers mark. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you've got a lot of it right: Chinese picture on silk, for the tourist market, the inscription reading Songyue, "pine moon", which may be the artist's pen name. The first character of the seal mark I am not sure of, the second character (on the left is xiang 香, meaning "fragrance".
Style is after Yuan literati such as Huang Gongwang (see his famous Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains handscroll)
