Subject:original? wood block question
Posted By: sherry Thu, Jan 01, 2015 IP: 23.118.76.148

Hello -
Any information provided regarding the attached would be greatly appreciated. I have included pictures of both the front and the back. The paper is extremely thin and the ink has soaked through to the back. It looks like the picture was cut down to fit a frame??

Your print is by Hiroshige and is from his Views of Kyoto series (Kyoto Meisho) and is titled: "Moonlight, Gate of Licensed Quarter". It may be an original. I haven't seen this one copied. With the poor photos provided it is hard to tell. The poor condition of your print seriously limits its value.

The link below will take you to an original print. Click on the next to last picture.

Cheers,
Stan

I note that the red seal below Hiroshige's signature in the upper left is different than on the original on the Hiroshige UK site and one at the Boston MFA. Looking closely at the enlarged portions you provide, I am pretty sure yours is a later repro.

Cheers,
Stan
