Subject:Old Porcelain Plate
Posted By: Tissa Fri, Jan 16, 2015 IP: 175.156.114.35

Hi everyone

I have one piece of old porcelain plate. Please see attached photo.

Diameter: 21.5 cm, light in weight.

Can anyone help me to identify whether this is genuine or a reproduction piece?

Thank you for your time and efforts.

Tissa

You do not say why you think this is "old".

Theme is inspired by middle-Ming decoration, but your example is quite new and not really a reproduction.

It is a genuine porcelain dish.

I think this piece has been dismissed too quickly simply based on the improbability of a piece of Chengua Doucai being genuine.

Could you please post close up images of the decoration and foot and hopefully someone can explain what is wrong and indicators to look for among pieces that are not obviously fake.

This is the only piece of Doucai that I own, damaged but genuine Kangxi and a rare European export example.

yes, but your plate is gorgeous whereas the decoration of the first plate posted seems imitative/derivative and does not convey a coherent, much less pleasing, organic whole. It feels to me that there's too much space between its relatively small decorative elements, each of which feels stiffly rendered and rigidly uncommunicative with the other elements of the decorative scheme. What makes you think it's a legitimate Qing imitation/version of Chenghua doucai (or however you would describe it) rather than a recent fabrication? I'm not trying to be difficult or sound mean, but why do you think it's something else?

Hi,

I think that closer images would allow a better evaluation which may well end in the same result but will at least let us all learn more.

It doesn't seem an immediate bad fake and bear in mind that the Chengua mark is most often seen on Kangxi pieces.

Fair enough. Having seen so many posts from people who seem to hold little interest in their purchases other than whether they can be resold at a large markup, I'm afraid my attitude has suffered!
