Subject:Cloisonne Signature Identification Help
Posted By: Cindy Sat, Feb 07, 2015 IP: 24.209.5.150

I am trying to find out the name of the artist who made this piece, a small cloisonne vase. The mark is impressed into the base.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

marks as seen on page 253 of Fredrick Schneider's The Art of Japanese Cloisonne Enamel

The author indicates Ota Toshiro was active ca. 1868-1940.

He also notes:
"Given the variety, frequent high quality, and apparent dates of pieces bearing this mark, both the author and an authority in Shippo-cho believe this mark to be Ota Toshiro, probably used on cloisonne he sold as retailer-exporter, rather than pieces he manufactured himself. The mark reads 'O.'" [long accent over the O]

Thank you for your reply! The mark also looks like one I have seen for Oto Jinnoei - I have included an image of the other mark for comparison purposes. I would love to hear your thoughts on whether the mark on my piece is a Toshiro or Jinnoei mark.
