Subject:Japanese blue bowl with 10 character mark
Posted By: victor Wed, Feb 11, 2015 IP: 86.169.187.132

Hi,

I have a Japanese monochrome blue bowl 22cm diameter and 11cm tall.
The interior has a fierce dragon, hand painted and the exterior has a 140 character script with a seal.

The base has an underglaze 10 character mark which I am trying to deceipher,4 of the last 5 look like Ling, unsure,Tai,Fu and Zhi.

If you can help in any way I would appreciate it. I'll also add closer shots when the thread is live.

Thanks,

Vic

The lines across the Dragon are from the light through the conservatory roof.

More images of the Calligraphy.

Well written on a curved surface and nicely spaced.

The ten-character mark appears to consist of the following characters, though I have no idea how to translate or transcribe them all properly in Japanese. In case you want to pore over it, here's the result of machine translation through the WWWJDIC program a.k.a. the Jim Breen Dictionary at Australia's Monash University:

開造祥瑞五良太夫製之:

-- 開造 【かいぞう】 (g) Kaizou

-- 祥瑞 【しょうずい】 (n) good omen; ED; Name(s): 【しょうずい】 (s,g) Shouzui 【さみず】 (s) Samizu 【ただみぞ】 (s) Tadamizo SrcHNA

-- 五良 【ごろう】 (m) Gorou 【ごりょう】 (g) Goryou SrcHNA

-- 太夫 : 太夫; 大夫 【たゆう】 (n) (1) (See 能太夫) high-ranking Noh actor; (2) head of a school of noh performance; (3) high ranking courtesan (esp. in Yoshiwara) (Edo-period); (4) (See 浄瑠璃,万歳・まんざい) joruri narrator; manzai narrator; (5) (See 女形) female role actor in kabuki; (6) (See 御師) low ranking priest in a Shinto shrine; (7) (太夫 only) lord steward (formerly the fifth court rank); ED; Name(s): 【たゆう】 (p,s,g) Tayuu 【だゆう】 (g) Dayuu SrcHNA

-- 製 【せい】 (suff) -made; make; SP; Name(s): 【すみあき】 (u) Sumiaki 【すみお】 (u) Sumio 【すみたか】 (u) Sumitaka 【すみとし】 (u) Sumitoshi 【すみはる】 (u) Sumiharu SrcHNA

-- 之 : 此れ(P); 是; 是れ; 之; 之れ; 維; 惟 【これ】 (pn) (1) (uk) (See 何れ・1,其れ・1,彼・あれ・1) this (indicating an item near the speaker, the action of the speaker, or the current topic); (2) (hum) this person (usu. indicating someone in one's in-group); (3) now; (4) (arch) here; (5) (arch) I (me); (6) (arch) certainly; (P); : 乃; 之 【の】 ; (prt) (arch) (之 used esp. on tombs, etc.) (See の・1) possessive particle; ED; Name(s): 【いたる】 (g) Itaru 【これ】 (g) Kore 【きさらぎ】 (u) Kisaragi 【ゆき】 (f) Yuki SrcHNA

Good Luck,

Bill H.

Thank you very much Bill; Using google translate comes up with the following

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%E9%96%8B%E9%80%A0%E7%A5%A5%E7%91%9E%E4%BA%94%E8%89%AF%E5%A4%AA%E5%A4%AB%E8%A3%BD%E4%B9%8B&rlz=1I7NDKB_enGB564&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=PjDiVIbNB4vgasGhgLgD&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&biw=1093&bih=461

The calligraphy on the Bowl I think will have to be undertaken at a later date.

I have been told the Bowl is 18-19th c according to the style of the Dragon.
