Subject:Chinese Salver - Red Hand script six character base mark
Posted By: Tom Wed, Feb 25, 2015 IP: 88.111.42.227

I would love some information on this old salver platter.

I think it's antique and may be made in China. It has raised multi coloured enamalled flower decoration and is about 12" long.

It has a nice red hand scripted six character base mark. Can any one decipher and age this piece please?

Kind Regards
Tom

This isn't a very traditional kind of pattern and has the overall look about it of transfer-decorated 20th century utilitarian tableware. The base mark has a Mandarin reading of "Yangcheng Wuchen Nian Zhi" (羊城戊辰年製), translatable as "Made in Guangzhou during the Wuchen Year", which Chinese cyclical date coincides with 1928 and 1988 in the context of this kind of decoration. Yangcheng is a nickname for Guangzhou, the former "Canton" in Guangdong Province.

Best regards,

Bill H.
