Subject:Two enormous Chinese plates
Posted By: Gillian Carthage Tue, Mar 10, 2015 IP: 50.53.51.186

I recently inherited two Chinese plates my father purchased from an antiques store in Japan in the early 1960's. For years I assumed they were mass-produced and identical. Closer inspection, though, shows they are of the same design but were hand-painted and differ quite a bit in many ways. They are about 21" in diameter. I would be interested in opinions as to their age, origin, original function if truly old, and whether they have value. Thank you so much.

These are attractive Japanese chargers, not Chinese (despite the Ming Chenghua reign mark). The Japan experts here may notice and offer more detail if you repost them as Japanese.

Incidentally this is a good illustration of the fact that marks are not a reliable determinant of date, or in this instance, country of origin.

Hi all,

Rat is right (of course). These are Japanese and probably made at the Shida kiln and dating from the second half of the 19th. century. Herewith a picture with some examples of shida ware. Sorry I'm not good with values.

Regards,

Arjan
