Subject:triptych woodblock kabuki ad?
Posted By: paul Mon, Mar 16, 2015 IP: 98.176.254.186

Triptych woodblock print. Possibly a kabuki ad? The printed area measures 13.5” x 27” (three separate sheets, each about 9” x 13.5”). Is it by anyone noteworthy?
I’m guessing mid-19th C. with a value of somewhere between $75 to $175.

It is a kabuki actor's tryptich (yakusha-e) by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kunimasa IV (1848-1920), here signing 'Oju Kochoro hitsu' (painted by Kochoro, by demand) and dated Meiji 23, 5th month (1890).
The publisher is Kobayashi Tetsujiro.
The actors are depicted with their names in the blue cartouches; the yellow cartouches contain their actor roles. I could decipher the names of Ichikawa Danjuro, Nakamura Jusaburo and Onoe Kikugoro. Could not retrace the actual kabuki play.

The values that you mention are correct.

Guy.

Guy,

Thanks for that. I was going crazy trying to figure out the artist. I knew about when it was done and still couldn't find the artist. I'm going to have to learn some Japanese to help with this hobby.

Cheers,
Stan
