Subject:Artist? Chinese cultural revolution era painting
Posted By: Tim Fri, Mar 20, 2015 IP: 76.110.209.69

I just bought this interesting Chinese painting on silk depicting stilt dancers relaxing on the back of a flat bed truck - note the one man smoking a cigarette.

The artist seems to have done a very good job of capturing the festive colors of the celebration (in all of its traditional Chinese glory), but I think more importantly, the realism of this scene of 'every day life' really speaks to me (the Western influence).

A friend said the piece is dated spring of 1985 and signed Chen Ting (陈挺).

However, the only artist I can find by this name is a landscape artist (1911-1992). I do not think the 'Ting' part of the name is correctly translated.

Some help would be appreciated. Many thanks as always.
Tim

It does say "Done by Chen Ting (but characters 陳亭) in the spring of 1987 (instead of 1985).

Found the following artist listing with same characters in Chinese at the link below, though relevance can't be determined:

Great bio...

If you don't mind me asking, how did you come across this info?

Nothing seems to come up, even when I search under the correct pinyin.

Thanks,
Tim

Your friend was right about the date and the pronunciation of the name. However, they wrote the 'ting' character incorrectly. it should have been 陳亭。

PS. I think you will find there are three men and four women.

Artist's name is Chen Ting but as you noticed, the correct "ting" character is 亭,so full name is 陈亭. Also date is 1987, not 1985; springtime.

Thanks.

Are the 1980's considered part of the cultural revolution, or is there another term?

Wikipedia put it from 1966 to 1976.

I suppose Western culture had penetrated fairly deep into China by the 1980's and I seem to remember that China was putting on several art/cultural exhibits at major museums world-wide. If I recall correctly, they had exhibited at the Museum of Fine Art in Boston where they had artisans demonstrating silk embroidery techniques and other forms of art.

The Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution is usually considered to have ended with the death of Mao Zedong in 1976.

Best regards,
