Subject:A porcelain plate from Japan?
Posted By: Luciano Mon, Apr 20, 2015 IP: 193.204.90.190

Hello,
I hope someone can help me to know something more about the porcelain plate, I suppose from Imari, which you can see in the attached pictures.
What do you think about this pottery, do you know the mark?
Thanks a lot and kind regards,
Luciano

Hi luciano,

No... this is not Japanese but Chinese. Your dish has a -so called- over the wall dragon motif. Altough your's seems rather hard in contrast (that might be caused by the picturequality)I think it could date from the first half of the 18th. century. The mark on it is a (Qing erea) shopmark. Herewith some pictures of a simular saucer dish with the same kind of marking.

Regards,

Arjan

Hello Arjan,
thank you so much for your very interesting and exhaustive answer and I apologize for my ignorance.
At this point, maybe that also this other plate, I have bought in the past from a japanese seller as an ancient Imari item (the first one has been bought in France), is from China: please, what do you think about it?
Thanks a lot again and best regards,
Luciano

Hi again Luciano,

No doubt... this is Japanese and it was made at the Shida kiln (Shida yaki). Probably dating from the second half of the 19th century. Herewith a picture of a dish with a collored version of a simular scene made at the Shida kiln.

Regards,

Arjan

Hello Arjan,
thank you very much for your kind and expert help.
If I can propose you a last question, I have also the plate in the attached pictures: I suppose it is also from Imari and I think that the kind of trees in the background are the masts of the ships in the harbour.
Do you think it is really so?
This is my last question and thank you again.
Kind regards,
Luciano

Hi Luciano,

This is from the same (Japanese) kiln... the Shida kiln. Dating ... probably around mid 19th. century. I'm not sure if that are ships. This wasn't "made" at Imari. In the 17th century they started to export porcelain made at Arita from the harbour of Imari to Europe. Thats why it's called Imari. Later on the colored ware (red/blue etc) became popular and they also started to call this "style" Imari. If you take a look at the picture you can see where the Arita harbour is situated. The Shida kiln was located at Shiota.

Regards,

Arjan

Correction of my former post:
It should be: "If you take a look at the picture you can see where the IMARI harbour is situated"
