Subject:Satsuma vase identification
Posted By: alison Thu, Apr 30, 2015 IP: 151.226.139.31

I am trying to identify the maker of this satsuma vase, my Grandmother has had it for at least 70 years, I am having difficulty finding any information about the mark on the bottom, any info would be much appreciated.

Your Japanese vase in Satsuma-style stoneware doesn't have a maker's mark but what appears to be a factory quality control number, in this case the character for the numeral six (六), but shown rotated 90 degrees to the left. Probably has something to do with size or position in an altar arrangement

Such vases have been made for years in Kyoto and other areas, but without any Satsuma markings, there's no basis for calling it Satsuma. Seventy years would be just about right for your Grandmother to have received the vase from someone in Japan with the post-war occupation forces.

Best regards,

Bill H.
