Subject:Republic porcelain - Artist signature translation?
Posted By: Greeno Fri, May 08, 2015 IP: 76.110.209.69

A friend of mine translated the writing on this jar to read 'Qianlong 1936, March' and signed Shu Chi.

I can not find any listings of a porcelain artist by this name, but I did find a famous artist Zhang Shuqi (1899-1956), but no mention of him doing porcelains.

Do I have the right translation of the artist name?

Thanks

There's no "shu chi" that I can see. Instead the bingzi cyclical year seems intended to date to the Qianlong emperor's reign (per the base mark and inscription), for a purported date of 1756. The shape and ornate decoration of this covered vase suggests to me that it's a modern fantasy piece, but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will post.

Thanks, Rat! Looks like it is a modern fake, but nicely decorated and for what I paid, not a big loss.

Curious about another matter....have you seen the paintings I've posted? http://www.asianart.com/phpforum/subforum.php?method=detail&Id=87411&sfid=4
Just trying to figure out who the artist is...only a seal, no signature.

Best,
Tim
