Subject:porcelain plaque - Need info on artist Xiong Fuqing
Posted By: Tim Sun, Jul 12, 2015 IP: 50.153.105.27

With the help of a friend, I learned that my plaque was painted by the artist Xiong Fuqing.

I was able to find one auction record, but almost no biographical info on the artist.

http://auction.artxun.com/paimai-94765-473824921.shtml

When I use Google to translate to English, it says, 'known by Wang Qi impact rather Big'.

I realize the translation may not accurately reflect the true meaning of what was intended, so I'm asking if anyone can help provide some additional information on this artist.

Was Xiong a predecessor that influenced Wang Qi, or was he a disciple who was influenced by Wang Qi? The manner of the faces clearly suggests a strong relationship.

The old label on the plaque suggested that the plaque was rendered c. 1860's. I believe the date is Ding Chou (丁丑) 1877,1937.

I am inclined to believe 1937, which is also the year Wang Qi died, but the thick application of the enamel work on the robes does look to me to be 19th c., but I do not have enough experience to be sure.

Also, if anyone has more auction records or info, I would appreciate a link.

Thank you.

The brief bio you found on the Chinese auction site webpage says that Xiong was greatly influenced by Wang, not the reverse.

This seems to be a modern imitation to me, not a work by Xiong. Compare the rendering of the male hands in each, for example, or the quality of the line that forms the tree contours in your plaque vs the reed in the auction site's plaque. The same quavering nervous line is seen in the detail of the branch next to the inscription in your final picture above.

Thank you for the clarification. I am hoping to see if anyone can produce other examples of his work for further comparison.

As for the age, I think the piece is of the period. There is no way to be sure the plaque was not placed into an older frame, but the wood, and hardware look correct for circa 1930's (not artificially aged like the modern repros).

As for the differences in brushwork, with only one example to compare I am hesitant to draw any conclusion regarding authenticity. I agree, the hands on the figure in my plaque are not well done, but in the plaque that sold at auction, the foot is also poorly rendered and has the same chubby disproportional look.

Also, consider this...

To my knowledge, the more famous artist Wang Qi has only gained high acclaim in the past 10 years, and copies of his work seem to have been produced during this recent period.

The less famous Xiong has gained recognition during this same period, so it stands to reason that copies of his works should also originate from the past 10 years or so.

Based upon the enamels and surface wear, I am certain it is not modern, but whether or not the piece is of the artist...well, let's find a few more examples for comparison if available.

There are a few more from Chinese auction houses when you run the artist's name through Google, but those aren't a particularly reliable source of genuine examples unfortunately.
