The design of deers by trees & rocks is a rebus for long life, often referred to as the 'hundred deer' motif, although your box shows far less than that many deer.

I've seen your type of lacquer box with a mixture of soapstone and/or bone carvings several times over the years.

I believe they are from the mid 20th c.
